A short and simple video that is directly from a manager, executive, CCO, or CEO that explains the importance of ethics & compliance can go a long way. Show your employees that company policies apply to all levels of your organization. Watch the example video below.
How-To:
First, assemble a few "Real World" and Fictional TV scenarios in which one or multiple ethics and compliance violations were committed. Once you have the list compiled and employees have been successfully grouped into teams of 2 or more, read off the scenario. See if they can guess which scenarios actually happened (Real) or if they are from a movie or TV show (Reel).
To get a better understanding of how this game can be played out as well as the type of questions that can be asked, click below on each of the example Real or Reel questions that were asked on a ComplianceLive Podcast last year.
Example Real or Reel Questions:
How-To:
Ask 10 questions to check colleagues’ awareness of compliance issues (ranging from naming the compliance officer in their department to describing the correct mode of conduct in a given situation). Play free-for-all or have employees arrange into teams of 3-6. The individual or team to get the most questions right, wins!
10 Questions is a great way to reward individuals for being knowledgeable about your company's compliance and ethics standards, staying up to date with existing policies, understanding of correct reporting methods, or participation in your speak-up culture. If gathering in a public space to conduct the game is not an option at your organization currently, using channels such as Slack or Team are fully viable, if not better alternatives.
Example Questions:
How-To:
Set up a desk or an entire room rigged with compliance violations, like confidential documents left visible, an expensive gift bag “from your favorite vendor,” and a few decoy items. Employers could either enter the room or study a photo sent by email, newsletter, or on posters and then submit their list of violations.
TIP: Bring out the competitive side of your employees by offering a prize incentive of your choosing! (cash normally does just fine)
How-To:
Test your employees' creativity! Allow for employees to get into teams of 2-6. Teammates will then collaborate together to create a compliance poster from scratch. Time is your friend with this one, so beginning the brainstorm sesh on Monday and blowing the whistle on Friday will not only benefit each team's end result but also keep compliance at the top of mind all throughout the week! Needless to say, a cash incentive would absolutely pull out the right brain in everyone.
How-To:
Similar to the best poster competition, this contest allows for employees to let their humor, creative and competitive nature shine. Have teams of two or more put their heads together to create a humorous image, video, piece of text that is relevant to corporate compliance and in the fashion of current online memes that are spread rapidly daily by internet users. Allow for 30 min. to 1 hour for teams to enter their submissions and reward the winning team however you see fit!
Which, in 2022, is on their phones and computers. A timely method to continue the focus on corporate compliance throughout the week is to either create or recommend some shareable online content that is relevant to corporate ethics. Click each box below to view options as to how You can reach your organization or department through original online content, relevant eBooks, and podcasts!
Nothing is more gratifying or encouraging than feeling seen, right? Recognizing individuals for their role in the company, understanding of procedures and policies, or participation throughout compliance week will immediately boost employee engagement. This recognition can come in many shapes and sizes. Send out a company-wide email with the results of the winning team(s) for any compliance games or competitions that were conducted through the week or take some time out of the work day to boast about your department's compliance officer. By showing recognition and awarding those who portray solid ethical behavior, colleagues will begin to follow. Ending the week with this conclusive nomination is a great way to wrap up compliance week and will help keep compliance on the top of mind for all in your organization.
Polling your organization is a great way to gauge how well your compliance team is doing to ensure a safe, positive workspace. We suggest kicking the poll off ahead of compliance week to allow you to review the responses and address anything with your employees (good or bad) about how you will improve in the future.
Use this time to create specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based goals that your team wants to achieve in 2022. Hold yourselves accountable by posting them around your office, on your team channels (i.e. Slack), or in your meeting space. You can use feedback from your polls to drive the change you want to make for the upcoming year.
Not every department has the same focus when it comes to compliance. A manufacturing floor is likely more concerned about EHS regulations than the same companies marketing department. By adjusting your messaging and making it relevant to the department that receives it, the information you are trying to convey will stick more effectively considering it applies to that specific department directly.
